Flushable Wipes have been ‘Ghosted’, Let’s ‘Creep’ it that way for Halloween

NI Water has welcomed the recent news that a major wipes manufacturer has been banned from advertising ‘flushable’ wet wipes. Wipes are a major problem across the sewer network and NI Water appreciate anything which helps to clarify the issue for customers.

That being said, ‘Halloween is coming and the sewers are getting fat, please put your FOG inside a trap!' NI Water is calling on customers to adopt better flushing habits and to bin anything other than Pee, Poo and Paper. 

From Thomas the Tank Engine and (NI Water friends) in Keady, to FOG blocking a sewer on the Lisburn Road, wet wipe monsters in Newtownabbey and a concreteberg in Omagh, we have seen it all! Our message is to only flush the 3P’s; Poo, Pee and Paper.

Gavin McCready, wastewater manager comments, “It doesn’t need to be Halloween for us to be afraid of what we find down there. 

“People are under the impression that the wet wipes are ok to flush, whether it’s facial, baby or toilet. The fact is they are not; even if they say flushable and this week was a win for the water industry with that label now being removed.  Unlike toilet paper, these wipes hold a certain amount of water and do not break down quickly enough to avoid causing a blockage. The same goes for FOG, instead of pouring it down the sink (this includes rinsing off cooking trays) scrape it into the bin or into a bottle for recycling.  

“All we ask is that people are more responsible with the disposal of their bathroom and food waste; the next blockage could be in your home, and that would be scary!”
