NI Water Brings Tunnel Vision to W5

Launched at W5 at the Odyssey, the images capture important moments during the course of the £130m project which is designed to reduce the risk of flooding in the Belfast area and improve water quality in the Lagan and Blackstaff Rivers.
Project Sponsor for NI Water, Bill Gowdy, said the exhibition would allow people to share in the history of the vital work.
“This is NI Water’s biggest ever infrastructure project to date and its completion represents a significant milestone for the development of Belfast.
“During the last three years, the Belfast Sewers Project has engaged with communities and businesses across the city to highlight the vital changes taking place right under their feet. The main sewer tunnel, for example, is almost big enough to drive a bus through and runs below some of the city’s best know landmarks.
“This exhibition is an excellent way for everyone to discover more about how this world-class project was realised.”
One of the most important engineering schemes ever undertaken in Northern Ireland, the ambitious project created more than nine kilometres of new tunnels, running at depths of up to 30 metres below the surface.
The largest addition to the sewer network spans four metres in diameter and stretches from Cromac Street to Belfast’s newly constructed wastewater pumping station at Duncrue Street.
