Inner Walls Public Realm Sewers, Derry/Londonderry
21 June 2016 16:11
Northern Ireland Water, through its appointed contractor Quinn Automatic Ltd, has commenced sewer rehabilitation work within the Derry City Walls. It is anticipated that this work will take approximately 10 weeks to complete.
This follows investigation works which were carried out during May 2016 to identify any defects within the existing sewerage system. The work is being programmed to be completed prior to the commencement of Public Realm work within the Walls later this year.
Due to the location of these works, and in order to minimise disruption to businesses, road users and the public some sections of this work will be programmed during night time hours. We will do everything within our means to keep noise levels to a minimum during the late evening and night time work. Where possible the work will be carried out using ‘no-dig’ trenchless techniques to minimise disruption, although at some locations ‘open-dig’ will be necessary.
Detailed traffic management arrangements have been discussed and agreed with Transport NI. In order to carry out the work safely, it will be necessary to have temporary road and lane closures in place at some locations. Where lane closures are in place, two way traffic will be maintained with the use of temporary traffic lights. Vehicular access will be maintained for residents and businesses where possible and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
As far as possible, the work will be planned to avoid clashing with major events in the city. NI Water and our contractor will continue to liaise with the City Centre Initiative to coordinate the work at different locations. We will also liaise with businesses within the area to facilitate access for deliveries etc.
On behalf of NI Water and our contractor Quinn Automatic Ltd, we would like to apologise for any disruption or inconvenience the work may cause, and assure you we will do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum and ensure the work is completed as soon as practicably possible.
NI Water would like to thank the public for their patience and co-operation while this essential work is completed.
