Sewer Replacement Work Continues & Watermains Improvement Scheme planned for Queensway, Lambeg
16 February 2016 16:08
NI Water is continuing work on a major £160,000 programme of work on a replacement sewer at Queensway, Lambeg. It is anticipated that this work will be completed in early March. This programme of work was essential due to the collapse of a small section of sewer and will improve the sewerage infrastructure, reducing the risk of ‘out of sewer’ flooding in the Queensway area of Lambeg.
Detailed traffic management plans as follows are currently in place to try to minimise the impact of these works to road users, and enable the works to be completed safely:
The separated Belfast bound lanes on Queensway at the Lambeg junction are currently closed. However, single lane traffic will be maintained in both directions on Queensway. To accommodate this, the existing traffic islands at the Lambeg junction have been partially removed and will be reinstated on completion of the works.
During this time there will be no right hand turn on to Lambeg Road when travelling in the Belfast direction, and no right hand turn on to Queensway form Lambeg Road. In addition, traffic will not be permitted to cross directly from Moss Road to Lambeg Road at this junction. All traffic diversions will be clearly signposted; however some delays can be expected and motorists should allow extra time to complete their journey.
Grahame Millar NI Water Project Sponsor said:
“This essential scheme will improve the sewerage infrastructure in the area and help reduce the number of blockages and sewer collapses. It will also reduce the risk of “out-of-sewer” flooding. NI Water will continue to liaise with Transport NI and local representatives as the construction period continues.
“I would appeal to the local community, particularly children and young people, to “stay safe” around any working areas. NI Water and our contractor would ask for the support of everyone to ensure that young people do not play in or around the construction sites or machinery.”
In order to minimise further disruption to residents, businesses and road users, NI Water has decided to accelerate plans to replace the existing watermain along this section of Queensway. This work will now be carried out directly after work on the sewer replacement has been completed.
This package of work is part of an overall £2.5 million investment in the watermains infrastructure in the wider Lisburn and West Belfast area. This investment will bring further benefits to the local community, as the upgraded watermains will improve the quality, reliability and security of the water supply, while reducing disruption and interruptions to supply caused by burst watermains. We anticipate that this final phase of work should take 3 weeks to be completed.
NI Water appreciates that work of this nature can be unavoidably disruptive at certain locations, particularly where temporary lane closures and traffic diversions are required. We have co-ordinated the two separate packages of work to reduce disruption and would like to thank the public for their patience and co-operation while this essential work is completed. We will work closely with Transport NI and other key stakeholders to minimise inconvenience to local residents, businesses and road users, as far as practicably possible.
