McIlveen views progress on multi-million Holywood/Kinnegar sewerage improvement project

It is anticipated that work on the NI Water project will be completed by summer 2016.
The project involves a major programme of sewer laying, tunnelling work and the construction of a pumping station in the Holywood/Kinnegar area. The majority of the work is taking place in the vicinity of Kinnegar Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) with construction of one of the main sewers across the A2 Belfast / Bangor Road, being tunnelled to mitigate traffic disruption. Coalisland-based GEDA construction is the contractor for this scheme.
Michelle McIlveen said: “I welcome the progress on this major project, which involves the construction of sewers and tunnels in the vicinity of the A2 Belfast / Bangor Road and railway line.
“The project will improve wastewater services for customers by diverting wastewater overflow discharges to a new wastewater pumping station adjacent to Kinnegar Wastewater Treatment Works, improving the overall infrastructure in the area and reducing the likelihood of odours.”
Investigation of the sewerage network previously confirmed that three Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) at Jacksons Road, Strathearn Court & Palace Barracks that discharge to the lagoons adjacent to the Wastewater Treatment Works, have previously led to odour issues. When complete, the project will allow for the removal of these CSOs.
The new pumping station will also pump sewage flows from the adjacent MOD facility and the Belfast Harbour Estate to Kinnegar WwTW for treatment.

In particular, this project will greatly improve the local sewerage infrastructure, which is over 50 years old, ensuring that NI Water provides its customers with a modern effective wastewater service.

NI Water views the protection of the environment as a major priority and invests significant resources and measures to safeguard it. NI Water was the first public body in Northern Ireland to have earned International ISO 14001 status for all its activities. This is an international quality assurance award based on a company’s environmental management system.”
