Update on Pipelaying work: Carland to Cookstown Strategic Watermain

NI Water would like to provide customers and motorists with the latest progress and traffic information concerning the laying of its new Carland to Cookstown Strategic Trunk Main.

The £2m project, which got underway mid November 2015, involves the laying of almost 12km of new water pipe between Carland Service Reservoir (off the Annaginny Road, Dungannon) and Sandholes Road in Cookstown to improve the security of water supply for customers in Cookstown and surrounding areas.

NI Water’s contractor for the scheme, Dawson-Wam, has to date successfully installed the new water pipe from Annaginny Road, across the A29 and along the Old Cookstown Road. Work is progressing along the A29 and the lane closure currently in operation is expected to last for approximately one more week until the contractor reaches the junction with Thornhill Road (around the 18th January).

From the Thornhill Road junction, where the A29 widens, up to the junction with the Drumconnor Road, Dawson-Wam will install the new water main within the hard shoulder of the A29. This section will take approximately 4 weeks to complete and a 40MPH speed limit will be imposed where pipelaying works are being carried out.

Once the contractor has passed the Thornhill Road junction on the A29, a second pipelaying squad will commence work on the Annaginny Road. A road closure will be required on a section of the Annaginny Road – from its junction with the A29 to its junction with Mineveigh Road - to facilitate this work. Pipelaying in this section is expected to be completed within 3 weeks and the diversion route approved by Transport NI during this time will be: Cookstown Road, Agharan Road, Newmills Road onto Annaginny Road.

Traffic signage will be implemented and letter drops carried out in advance to any properties within the affected areas.

Going forward, we hope by utilising the hard shoulder area of the A29 that traffic delays will be minimised and I would take this opportunity to appeal to motorists to adhere to the 40mph speed limit to ensure the safety of our work force, themselves and the wider public.”
