McIlveen welcomes completion of £4.8Million Wastewater Investment in County L’Derry

Regional Development Minister Michelle McIlveen has welcomed the completion of three major wastewater schemes which have recently been completed in County Londonderry, representing a total investment of £4.8million.



The minister visited Feeny Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW), which was recently upgraded at an investment of approximately £1.5million. The upgrade will allow for future development in the area, as well as improving the water quality in the local Owenbeg River.



Similarly, a £1.6million upgrade at Maghera Wastewater Treatment (WwTW) took place at the existing site on the Mullagh Road, serving Maghera and the surrounding areas. The upgrade will also bring environmental improvements, improving the water quality in the Moyola River.



Finally, a £1.7million upgrade took place at Gortnahey WwTW in Limavady, which serves Gortnahey village and the surrounding areas. The work took place at the existing site on the Gortnahey Road and will greatly improve wastewater services for customers as well as improving the water quality in the local Woodburn River.



Speaking at the Feeny site, Regional Development Minister Michelle McIlveen welcomed the upgrades at all three sites. She said: "These projects represent a significant investment in modernising wastewater treatment systems in county Londonderry and will bring many environmental benefits to local communities.



“The new treatment facilities will serve the areas well for many years to come and the infrastructure improvements will also ensure continued compliance with foreseeable Northern Ireland Environment Agency and European standards.”



Sara Venning, CEO of NI Water added: “We at NI Water are pleased to have completed these essential wastewater schemes, and were delighted to show the minister around the Feeny site to see some of the improvements first-hand.



“Customers in the local area will benefit from the schemes, which will also accommodate future local development in the area.”
