Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has welcomed the completion of work on two new pumping stations in the Groomsport area. The work carried out by NI Water represents an investment of approximately £342,000. The upgrades took place at Groomsport Point and Groomsport Harbour.Danny Kennedy said:
“This major investment is part of an ongoing £3m pumping stations programme to upgrade key pumping stations throughout Northern Ireland.
“These improvements will benefit the community by modernising the local sewerage infrastructure and ensuring that the local pumping stations are operating as efficiently and effectively as possible.
“The scheme will also deliver environmental benefits such as improving the North Down coastal waters. The improvements will also help reduce the risk of flooding in the Groomsport area.”
Peter Ferguson, NI Water Project Manager added:
“This project involved the extensive refurbishment of all of the mechanical and electrical equipment within the existing wastewater pumping stations.
Telemetry equipment was also installed so that the pumping stations can be monitored remotely by NI Water. This will allow NI Water operatives to deal with any problems much more quickly and effectively. Major improvements were also carried out to the exterior of both pumping stations, resulting in more aesthetically-pleasing areas.
“The new pumping stations will serve the scenic Groomsport area for many years to come and will also ensure continued compliance with foreseeable Northern Ireland Environment Agency and European standards.”
