NI Water announce £3 million scheme for Armagh to begin

NI Water can announce that a £3 million programme of sewer improvements in the Armagh area has been scheduled to begin at the end of October 2014 with completion expected by late spring 2016.  

The investment package consists of a number of projects aimed at maintaining and upgrading the city’s sewerage system, ensuring Armagh City can continue to expand and sustain economic growth well into the future.  

The work will reduce the likelihood of out of sewer flooding and restrict storm discharges to the Callen, Dirty Water and Ballynahone Rivers at Scotch Street, the Mall, Alexander Road, Gillis Road, English Street, Newry Road and Loughgall Road.

It also includes an upgrade of the existing Newry Road Wastewater Pumping Station in line with criteria set by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA). The work will not only meet NIEA requirements, but will also allow for future development within Armagh city for the next 30 years.

• The first stage which involves sewer laying in Lonsdale Road, will start in October 2014 and will be completed before the Christmas embargo at the end of November 2014.
• The second stage mainly involves sewer laying in fields and within the existing Wastewater Pumping Station in the Newry Road area. However some short term road closures will be required and signage will be in place advertising necessary details. 
• The third stage which includes sewer laying in the Alexander Road, Mall West, Mall East, Barrack Street and Newry Road commences in April 2015 with the major construction work expected to be completed before Christmas 2015.
• The fourth and final stage which involves sewer laying in Railway Street and the Mall East, will start in January 2016 and is due to be completed by the spring of 2016..

Detailed traffic management plans have been discussed and agreed with Transport NI to try to minimise the impact of these works in the main arterial route through Armagh.  NI Water will continue to liaise closely with Transport NI to minimise disruption throughout this contract.  It is inevitable there will be delays during this period of time, but NI Water will keep traffic controls under constant review.
