Essential Storm Sewer Improvement Work Gets Underway at Mersey Street, Belfast

NI Water wish to advise the public that the construction of a new stormwater sewer is planned to commence in the Mersey Street area of East Belfast on the 27th August. We anticipate that work in this area will be completed by December 2014.

The scheme, which represents an investment of approximately £249,000, includes the provision of a new stormwater sewer, which is approximately 490 metres in length, commencing at the junction of Banbury Street and Mersey Street, which will then transfer flows to the Connswater River. This sewer will serve Banbury Street; Chelsea Street; Harkness Parade; Redcliffe Drive; Redcliffe Parade; and Redcliffe Street.

At present, both foul and storm flows from the above-named streets discharge into the Mersey Street combined sewer. However, this proposal will provide a dedicated storm sewer for these streets to transfer storm water flows into the Connswater River in an effort to reduce the impact on the existing sewerage network and to facilitate future development in the area. This work will also reduce the risk of flooding in the local area.

NI Water and our contractor Conwell Contracts would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation and will do everything possible to keep disruption to a minimum. Letter drops will also be completed in affected areas to advise residents of this work.
