Repeat Targeting of NI Water Site Needs to Stop

NI Water is appealing for the assistance of the community after the discovery of damage to equipment at Woodvale Avenue which is currently being used to upgrade water mains infrastructure for the Belfast area.

A recent attack of vandalism in Woodvale Avenue is the latest in a stream of attacks which saw barriers, walkboards, cones and timber signage being burnt out.

Keith Haslett from NI Water commented: “Unfortunately, vandalism is an all too common problem at some of our sites and this is not the first time we have had problems in areas of Belfast. This further damage could cost in the region of £13,000 to repair.  

“This work site is there to improve water quality and security of supply, so any damage to this impacts on service delivery by NI Water.  The cost is also a factor, totalling £13,000 so far, which creates a needless drain on resources that could be better used to improve our services.

‘‘We are also very worried about the risks to personal safety.  NI Water takes all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of our site, but we remind the public that our working sites should only be accessed by trained and qualified personnel.  I would call on those who are involved in vandalism and unauthorised access to stop immediately before they cause injury to themselves or a severe incident in their own local community.

“Our ultimate aim is to complete a scheme that will serve the community long after the diggers and workmen have gone.  NI Water wants to work with the local community to achieve this goal.
