Cloughey Pumping Station Gets a “New Look”

Cloughey North Wastewater Pumping Station is taking on a whole new look thanks to an extensive makeover by Northern Ireland Water.

The pumping station, which is located on the sea front in Cloughey village, has been recently refurbished with a host of new pumping and electrical equipment to boost the performance of the station and deliver environmental benefits in the area.

The improvements – which represent an investment of over £200,000 include new landscaping around the pumping station which will enhance the overall aesthetics of the area, as Peter Ferguson, NI Water’s Project Manager for the scheme explains:  

“Cloughey North Pumping Station has been converted from a ‘dry well’ to ‘wet well’ station, which means that all the new pumping infrastructure has been placed below ground. This new arrangement has allowed NI Water to demolish the old, highly visible above-ground structure and commence landscaping to leave a much more visually-attractive area.

“New control panels for the refurbished pumping station have also been housed in a small kiosk which will be largely hidden by the new planting.”

Commenting on the positive operational impact that the upgrade will have on the local environment, Peter added:
“The emergency storage capacity at the pumping station has been increased and an emergency overflow screen has been fitted in the pumping station in line with NI Environment Agency requirements. The more efficient and reliable pumps installed should result in fewer blockages in the future.”

This major NI Water investment will help reduce the risk of out-of-sewer flooding in the area and will improve the sewerage infrastructure for many years to come.
