Kennedy Visits £3.1m Wastewater Improvement Programme for North Down

The scheme, which got underway in November 2013 will be completed before summer 2014.
Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said: “This major project represents an investment of around £3.1million.
“With upgrade work underway at Luke’s Point and the construction of the new Pumping Station at Bangor Marina, the investment will deliver extra storage capacity into the system, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
“The quality of the bathing water quality along the Bangor coastline will also improve as a result of the work.
“This project has helped secure jobs in the local construction industry and I congratulate Maghera-based construction firm BSG Civil Engineering and AECOM (Belfast) on securing this very significant contract”
Bill Gowdy NI Water’s Director of Engineering Procurement added: “The project will greatly improve the water quality in Ballyholme strand and the surrounding watercourses, whilst improving the capacity of the sewerage infrastructure in the surrounding area. The work will also ensure that NI Water complies with Northern Ireland Environment Agency standards and EU Directives for bathing water quality.
“As with all work of this nature, there will be some disruption in these areas throughout this essential improvement work. NI Water would like to thank North Down Borough Council for their assistance and would like to thank local residents and businesses for their ongoing patience.
“Traffic management will be in place, where necessary and the team will work with the local community as much as possible to minimise any disruption.”
Subject to funding, the next phases of this programme of work will involve upgrading Castle Park Pumping Station, followed by further phases of work planned at Brompton and Stricklands Sewage Pumping Stations, and improving the sewerage infrastructure in the Carnalea and Clandeboye road areas.
NI Water also intends to invest an additional £300k within Bangor Town Centre to improve the water and sewerage infrastructure in advance of North Down Borough Council’s public realm work getting underway. This essential programme of improvement will get underway in Summer 2014. The improvements will safeguard the future water and sewerage infrastructure and minimise any future disturbance to the new improvements carried out under the Public Realm project.
NI Water and our contractor, BSG Civil Engineering will do everything possible to complete the work as quickly as possible with minimum inconvenience.
