£1.5 Million Sewer Improvement Scheme Gets Underway in Hillsborough Area

22 August 2013 11:26

NI Water has commenced work on a major programme of Sewer Improvement Work in the Culcavy Road area of Hillsborough.

The work involves laying a sewerage pumping main along the Culcavy Road from the Hillsborough Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) to the Magherageery sewage pumping station. Construction of the pumping main commenced on 12th August 2013 and work is expected to continue for approximately 10 weeks.

As the Sewer Improvement Work moves off the main road, motorists can expect to experience relatively low level of traffic disruption due to works traffic accessing the site. This is likely to continue for around 6 months, but will have less impact once the main road works are complete.

The existing Hillsborough Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) has reached the end of its useful life, and is in need of replacement. NI Water decided that the preferred option is to transfer the sewerage to the Lisburn Catchment and treat it at the New Holland WwTW site. This scheme will improve the sewerage infrastructure in the Hillsborough and Culcavy area, accommodating future development, and will vastly improve the water quality in the local Carnreagh River and its receiving water- the River Lagan.

As with all work of this nature, there may be some traffic disruption during the installation of this pumping main. Traffic management is in place, such as traffic light systems and lane closures where necessary. As short road closures may also be required, NI Water in co-operation with DRD Roads Service will do everything possible to keep any disruption to a minimum and ensure that public transport services function with minimum affect to the local community.

NI Water and our contractor BSG Civil Engineering Ltd. would like to thank the public for their understanding and patience in this matter and will do everything possible to complete the work as quickly as possible with minimum inconvenience caused.  This work will be completed in sections and traffic management including signage will be in place throughout this work.

If anyone has any issues regarding the improvement scheme, NI Water’s customer relations team can be contacted via Waterline on 08457 440088.
