Essential Water & Sewer Improvement Scheme Continues in Lisburn

NI Water is currently working on essential improvements to the water and sewerage infrastructure in Lisburn city centre. The existing infrastructure is defective and aging, and it is essential that NI Water upgrades the necessary watermains and sewers in advance of Lisburn City Council’s “Public Realm” scheme getting underway.

Lisburn City Council, with funding from the Department of Social Development (DSD), intends to invest some £4 million to develop Lisburn city centre’s public realm. The council intends to carry out this scheme in various areas in the town including Bow Street, Market Street, Haslem’s Lane, Market Street, Market Lane, Graham Gardens, Bridge Street, and Castle Street.

In order to minimise any future disturbance to the new improvements carried out under the Public Realm project, it is essential that NI Water progress with the upgrading of the necessary watermains and sewers in the same areas as soon as possible before new surfaces are put in place by the council.

NI Water’s proposed infrastructure improvements will involve the installation of watermains and/or sewers along Bow Street, Market Street, Haslem’s Lane, Market Street, Market Lane, Graham Gardens, Bridge Street, and Railway Street. Work is currently underway in the Bow Street area and the entire programme of work will be completed by September 2013.

There will be associated traffic and pedestrian restrictions required to allow the works to be completed in a safe environment. This will include lane and road closures in the area at certain times. However, signage will be in place and the public will be made aware in advance of these closures. The majority of the work will take place at night in order to minimize traffic disruption & interruption to the local water supply.

This programme of work is good news for the local area, as the work will also reduce disruption caused to NI Water customers as a result of necessary maintenance of defective and aging sewers. The upgraded watermains will improve the reliability, security and quality of the water supply, while reducing leakage.
