Kircubbin Primary School visited the NI Water Wastewater Heritage Centre in Belfast as part of events set up by the utility to mark World Toilet Day.

At the special event, students joined NI Water’s education team to become ‘Sewer Detectives’ and find out what they should and shouldn’t be flushing down the toilet with a range of activities.

World Toilet Day is celebrated on the 19 November each year to raise awareness of the almost 1.7 billion people that are living without a decent toilet of their own.

Kircubbin Primary School was one of many schools invited to take part in the Sewer Detective Mission. Students won some special NI Water goodies for completing their mission, while also finding out key information and helping to celebrate this unique day for the humble toilet. This activity enabled students to learn about World Toilet Day and inform their households on what they should and shouldn’t be flushing.

NI Water education officer Anna Killen said: “NI Water supports WaterAid to show that a toilet is not just a toilet; it’s a life-saver, dignity-protector and opportunity-maker. Everyone has the right to sanitation, but without this, diseases spread fast and people’s lives are put at risk.

“It is also a timely reminder for us here in Northern Ireland to ensure we ‘Bag it and Bin it; Don’t Flush it’.  If you flush wipes, nappies and sanitary items down the toilet this can cause blockages in our sewer systems resulting in out of sewer flooding and unfortunately these eyesores and pollutants can reappear in our communities and on our beaches impacting the environment.”
