NI Water recently teamed up with W5 and its exciting Bright Sparks programme this summer to host over 150 budding scientists at its Belfast Wastewater Heritage Centre over the past five weeks.

At the Centre, the Bright Sparks learned about the sights and smells of the Belfast sewerage system past and present before rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into some fun practical activities. The young visitors also discovered how NI Water cleans sewage before releasing it safely back into the environment. There was also the opportunity to investigate how pollution impacts the natural environment and they learned more about the importance of only flushing the three Ps – Pee, Poo and Paper - and also bagging and binning any fat, oil and grease to prevent pipe blockages.

NI Water Education Officer Anna Killen said: “We are extremely proud of our free community education programmes, including our visitor experiences at our Belfast Wastewater Heritage Centre. We are continually committed to working with young people not only to inspire them in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities and careers, but also to provide a valuable resource that engages, inspires and educates everyone about our wastewater network and how we can all play our part in keeping our sewers free from wipes, FOG and anything else that should not be in there. Thanks to everyone who participated this summer. We hope you enjoyed your time with us.”

The NI Water Heritage Wastewater Centre in Belfast offers an educational experience where students between Key Stage Two and Three can learn about the history and current practices of the Belfast sewerage system.
