One-way road closure planned for Shore Road to facilitate essential sewer repair
30 July 2024 15:40
NI Water will be undertaking a substantial sewer repair in the vicinity of McDonalds on the Shore Road in Belfast from Monday 12th August.
To facilitate the work, a one-way closure will be in place from Fortwilliam Park for approximately three weeks.
NI Water Senior Project Manager, Robert McLean said: “NI Water has identified that a major repair is required on the sewerage network adjacent to the entrance of McDonalds on the Shore Road in Belfast.
“Our contractor Dawson WAM will have to work at a substantial depth to repair the sewer and to undertake the work as safely as possible, Shore Road will need to be closed to city-bound traffic from its junction with Fortwilliam Park from Monday 12th August to Friday 31st August.
“During this time, vehicular access to McDonalds and all other businesses on Shore Road, between the city centre and McDonalds, will be available in a country-bound direction only. For safety reasons, the footpath in front of McDonalds will need to be closed.
“Signage to notify road users will be erected well in advance of the work getting underway and an extensive letter drop has been carried out in the wider Shore Road area. A diversion route for motorists will be clearly signposted while work is ongoing.”
Commenting specifically on the Shore Road bus services, Mr McLean added: “Due to the one-way road closure, a number of city-bound bus stops on Shore Road between Fortwilliam Park and Skegoneill Avenue will not be accessible during this work. A dedicated shuttle bus will be in operation to service the Skegoneill Fortwilliam Crescent, Skegoneill York Drive and Skegoneill Seaview stops.
“The shuttle bus will run from approximately 06:00 – 22:00 Monday – Saturday and 09:00 – 21:00 on a Sunday, picking up at Mount Vernon and travelling along Fortwilliam Park, Somerton Road and Skegoneill Avenue before rejoining Shore Road and servicing the remainder of stops between Skegoneill Avenue and York Street.
“Signage will be erected on all the suspended stops to advise passengers of the nearest operating city-bound bus stop.
“NI Water and our project team from AECOM and Dawson WAM would like to thank local businesses, residents and commuters for their patience and cooperation while we undertake this essential repair work. We will do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum and complete the work in the shortest possible timeframe.”
Following this imminent repair, NI Water will plan a programme of sewer lining works in the wider Shore Road area. These measures will provide a more resilient wastewater network, helping to reduce the likelihood of sewer collapses, blockages and out-of-sewer flooding in the locality. It is expected that the majority of the lining work will be undertaken from existing
manholes, requiring only a localised lane closure around a working area. NI Water will keep businesses, residents and the wider community informed on this subsequent programme of work.
