Overview of NI Water’s Planned Infrastructure Investment in Newry, Mourne and Down District Council during Price Control 21 (2021/22 to 2026/27)

NI Water met with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council representatives on Monday 29th April 2024 to provide an overview of NI Water’s planned infrastructure investments, challenges and development constraints going forward for the Council area.

NI Water emphasised its commitment to finding solutions and exploring all available options to work with Councils and developers to progress the Council’s ambitions for the people in their area.

 

NI Water’s Director of Finance, Regulation & Commercial Ronan Larkin said: “NI Water’s goal in the council area is to ensure there is a modern, efficient service today and in the future. 

“These services play a pivotal role in protecting NI’s environment and growing NI’s economy. NI Water are committed to delivering this for the benefit of all by maximising infrastructure, investigating options for targeted interventions, promoting developer led and financed solutions through the solution engineering team and also providing robust planning responses.”

NI Water highlighted the completion of a number of capital projects in the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council area including Warrenpoint WwTW £16m SWELL Project and the £9m investment in Fofanny Clear Water Basin.

The ongoing work on the Mourne Wall was outlined which includes more than 300 repairs completed across 15 mountains, 900 collapses fixed over 22 miles since 2017. The recent celebration of the 100 year anniversary since cutting the first sod was discussed. This event was attended by local schools, relatives of original workers, elected representatives and competition winners,

A number of slides with information on current sewer and wastewater issues and proposed investment in Newry Mourne and Down District Council were presented at the meeting.
