Toome Road Flood Alleviation Scheme Continues – Wakehurst Road
05 June 2020 14:36
NI Water will commence work on the next phase of this essential flood alleviation scheme on Monday 8th June 2020. The work will involve the upgrade and realignment of sewers on Wakehurst Road and Wakehurst Park, and we anticipate that this phase of work will take approximately 12 weeks to complete.NI Water has been identified as an essential service provider in response to COVID-19 and the Government has officially designated our workforce as ‘key workers’ in a critical public service.
NI Water and various support teams have never been more essential to the health and wellbeing of our customers than now, and we would ask the public to be supportive of our workers during this difficult time.
To enable the work to be carried out safely, a one-way closure of Wakehurst Road will be in place from Monday 8th June 2020 for 6 weeks. During this time, there will be no access to Wakehurst Road from Queen Street, with a diversion route in place via Queen Street, Henry Street and Larne Road. Traffic will be permitted to access the Wakehurst Road from the Larne Road.
Vehicular access will be maintained for residents and businesses during this time, but may be subject to slight delay and pedestrian access will be available at all times. Normal working hours will be 7.30am to 4.30pm; however, it may be necessary on occasion for the work to be undertaken outside of these hours.
Once the new Wakehurst Road sewers have been completed, work will commence on Wakehurst Park where a road closure will also be necessary and further details will be provided to the affected residents in advance of this phase.
NI Water and our contractor BSG Civil Engineering will liaise with any affected properties. We appreciate that this work is disruptive and would like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their continued patience as we complete these essential improvement works.
We are all practising social distancing – our priority is to keep customers and colleagues safe. So please keep your distance and our workers will carry on with their essential work for you.
Once complete, this project will improve the local sewerage infrastructure and reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding and environmental pollution in this part of the sewerage network during periods of heavy rainfall.
A few key points to remember:
• If we need to visit your home during this time, to keep you and us safe, please make our staff aware if you are self-isolating. We will also ask you to respect social distancing for our colleagues if they are on your property.
• Remember wipes will clog the sewers and result in blockages and flooding – never flush a wipe. For further information log on to www.niwater.com/bag-it-and-bin-it/
• Beware of Bogus Callers – if you are concerned about the identity of someone at your door, you can call the PSNI non-emergency number ‘101’ where you will have the option of a ‘Quickcheck’ to confirm the caller is from the utility they say they are.
• Do not let children go near work sites or equipment, this can be extremely dangerous.
