Emergency Sewer Repair gets underway at Maryville Avenue (Lisburn Road)

NI Water has recently been investigating the cause of out of sewer flooding in the Ferndale Court/Maryville Avenue area of South Belfast. During this time, tankering operations have been in place to maintain the sewer network and reduce the risk of ‘out of sewer’ flooding.
NI Water have been working closely with Translink NI Railways to identify the problem with the sewer. This has now been located and is on the main sewer within Translink NI Railways property adjacent to the railway line to the rear of Ferndale Court. To prevent further deterioration of the sewer and possible further flooding incidents, it is essential to undertake this repair as a matter for urgency.
Preparation work in advance of the repair is now underway, which will involve the clearance of vegetation along this section of the line, as well as some trial excavations to locate existing cables. Vegetation clearance is required to allow the works to be undertaken safely.
The repair works will then commence on Friday 18th January with the installation of sheet piling to stabilise the ground adjacent to the railway, which we anticipate will take 1 night, and repair of the sewer will then follow on.
Due to the location of the sewer (adjacent to the main Belfast to Dublin railway line), it is only possible to undertake the repair work during night time hours between 12 midnight and 5.30am. The work will involve some noise disturbance during these hours, particularly during the installation of the sheet piles.
Until the repair has been completed, it is also necessary to undertake temporary pumping to maintain the existing flows in the sewer. A temporary pump will be located adjacent to the railway line at the bottom of Maryville Avenue.
NI Water and our contractor Deane Public Works fully recognise that these works will be disruptive to local residents, and will endeavour to minimise noise as far as is possible during these times.
All access to the railway by our contractor with plant and material will be via Adelaide Station; which again, can only be undertaken during these nighttime hours.
We currently anticipate that all repair work will take approximately 2 weeks to complete.
