Ormeau Avenue Sewerage Improvement Scheme Re-commences

Work is progressing well on this major £5 million project to improve the sewerage infrastructure in the Ormeau area, which includes work around Ormeau Avenue, Dublin Road, Bruce Street, Sandy Row and sections of the lower Ormeau Road.
Work will re- commence at the following locations in early January:-
Dublin Road - Pipeline installation will take place between Ventry Lane and Pakenham Street. In order to carry out the work safely and maintain traffic flow, it is necessary to suspend some of the parking bays along this section of the street. We anticipate this work will take approximately 4 weeks to complete. Following completion of work on the Dublin Road, sewer laying will move into Pakenham Street where a road closure will be in place.
It is also necessary to construct a manhole on the Dublin Road, close to its junction with Bankmore Street. Due to the nature and location of this work, and in order to minimise disruption to businesses and the public, it will be undertaken over a weekend. Work is programmed to commence on Friday 11th January at 7pm and continue until 7am on Monday 14th January (24 hours). A temporary one-way closure will be in place between Ormeau Avenue and Bruce Street during this time for traffic coming from Ormeau Avenue and Bedford Street. NI Water will endeavor to minimum noise as far as possible during these night time works.
Ormeau Avenue - Pipeline installation works between Adelaide Street and Bedford Street. During these works for safety reasons, it is necessary to suspend some of the parking bays along this section of the street. Two-way traffic will be maintained during the works with a contraflow system in place. It will also be necessary to relocate the pedestrian crossing at this location for a short period to facilitate the work.
Marcus Ward Street – Work on a new storm sewer is programmed to commence in mid-January. We anticipate that this work will take approximately 4 weeks to complete, and a road closure will be in place during this time. Vehicular access will be maintained for residents, and pedestrian access will be available at all times. The Dublin Road NCP car park will remain open as usual with a diversion route clearly signposted.
We will continue to endeavour to keep the public updated with timescale for completion of each section of the project. However, as with any large and complex capital project, adjustments to timeframes are to be expected.
When complete, this investment will significantly reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding in this area of Belfast during periods of heavy rainfall. Environmental pollution will also be reduced, and the water quality in the Blackstaff Culvert and River Lagan will be enhanced.
