£5 Million Ormeau Sewerage Improvement Scheme Progressing Well

21 November 2018 14:13

Work is progressing well on this major £5 million project to improve the sewerage infrastructure in the Ormeau area, which includes work around Ormeau Avenue, Dublin Road, Bruce Street, Sandy Row and sections of the lower Ormeau Road.

Wastewater Pumping Station / Hardcastle Street - Work is progressing well with construction of the new reinforced concrete underground pumping station nearing completion.

Bankmore Square / Hardcastle Street – Pipeline installation are now complete, with road reinstatement underway. Hardcastle Street is due to be fully re-opened week commencing 26th November. However, further works will be undertaken at the other end of Hardcastle Street on Marcus Ward Street in Jan/Feb 2019.

Ormeau Avenue – Pipeline installation works continue between Adelaide Street and Linenhall Street. During these works for safety reasons, it is necessary to suspend some of the parking bays along this section of the street. Two way- traffic is being maintained during the works with a contraflow system in place.

Cromac Street – Pipeline installation works will continue along the footpath. During these works, it will be necessary to incorporate a one-way stop/go system for a short period along a section of Cromac Street. To minimise traffic congestion in the area, this section of works is planned to be carried out on Sunday 25th November between 8am and 5pm with single lane traffic and stop/go boards in operation.

Dublin Road – Pipeline installation works continue between Ventry Lane and Pakenham Street. During these works for safety reasons, it is necessary to suspend some of the parking bays along this section of the street. Two- way traffic is being maintained.

In order to minimise disruption to traffic over the Christmas period, work on these main routes will be suspended from Monday 26th November, re-commencing with the same traffic management arrangements on Monday 7th January 2019.

Work will continue throughout December along the footpath at Cromac Street and pipeline installation works will get underway during the week commencing 26th November within the Charlotte Street Car Park and in front of the NIFRS Station. During this time and for safety reasons it will be necessary to suspend some of the parking bays within this car park for approximately 3 weeks.

Hope Street – Pipeline installation works are due to commence in early January 2019. These works will be between Hope Street Car Park, Holiday Inn Hotel and Sandy Row junction and traffic management arrangements will be confirmed in due course.

We will endeavour to keep the public updated with the timescale for the completion of each section of the project. However, as with any large and complex capital project, adjustments to timeframes are to be expected.

When complete, this investment will significantly reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding in this area of Belfast during periods of heavy rainfall. Environmental pollution will also be reduced, and the water quality in the Blackstaff Culvert and River Lagan will be enhanced.

NI Water would like to thank the public for their ongoing patience and cooperation during the completion of this essential improvement work. We assure you that we will do everything that we can to keep all future disruption to a minimum.
