NI Water Greystown / Malone Flood Alleviation Project Progressing Well
21 September 2018 12:07
Works are progressing well on a £4 million multi-agency Flood Alleviation Project in the Greystown/Malone area of South Belfast, which is jointly funded by NI Water and the Department for Infrastructure Rivers. The scheme involves the upgrading of the existing combined sewers and the DfI Rivers culvert from Upper Malone Road to Finnis Close, which when complete will reduce the risk of ‘out of sewer’ flooding and environmental pollution in the area.
Sewer installation works are progressing well along Greystown Avenue towards the Upper Malone Road with Greystown Avenue remaining closed until the middle of November. During this time, the current diversion route will remain in place, with access available via Finaghy Road South and Greystown Park. Vehicular access will be maintained as far as possible for residents within the working area and pedestrian access will be available at all times. A lane closure will also remain along a section of Greystown Avenue during this time.
Upper Malone Road
Construction works will shortly be commencing on the Upper Malone Road, starting with trial excavations, and the installation of a temporary traffic island to facilitate traffic management. This will be followed by sewer laying across the Malone Road, under a temporary lane closure, with two-way traffic maintained with temporary traffic signals. This work will be undertaken at weekends to minimise disruption as far as possible, work will commence on Saturday 22nd September and will run until late November 2018.
Throughout this period, sewer laying work will be carried out on weekdays on the Upper Malone Road. Two-way traffic flow will be maintained on weekdays, with a temporary traffic lane remaining open in either direction.
Normal working hours for the above work will be 7.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Sunday; however, it may be necessary at times for work to be carried out outside of these hours.
Construction works on the Upper Malone Road will be suspended during the Department for Infrastructure Christmas Embargo Period.
NI Water, our contractor BSG Civil Engineering and the Department for Infrastructure Rivers would like to thank the public for their ongoing patience and co-operation, we will continue to do everything possible to reduce disruption while we complete these essential Flood Alleviation works.
