Ormeau Avenue - Sewer Upgrade Project Continues

06 September 2018 14:09

Work is progressing well on this major £5 million project to improve the sewerage infrastructure in the Ormeau area, which includes work around Ormeau Avenue, Dublin Road, Bruce Street, Sandy Row and sections of the lower Ormeau Road.

Work is ongoing at the new Wastewater Pumping Station at Hardcastle Street, as well as the following locations:-

Bankmore Square/ Hardcastle Street – Pipeline installation work is continuing on Hardcastle Street, with access maintained to all businesses. A road closure is currently in place on Hardcastle Street between Bankmore Street and the NCP Car Park entrance until approximately mid-October. NCP Car Park remains open for business as usual and diversion signs are in place.

Alfred Street – Pipeline installation works continuing, during these works, the 2-way cycle lane is suspended, as well as the temporary suspension of some of some parking bays along the street.

Clarence Street / Adela Street – To accommodate the works in Alfred Street, a temporary 1-way cycle lane is in place en-route Out of City along Adelaide Street. To facilitate this, there is a temporary suspension of parking bays along the route between Clarence Street and Ormeau Avenue.

The following works will commence during September:-

Ormeau Avenue – Pipeline installation works are due to commence on Monday 10th September 2018 around the junction of Alfred Street, and will progress towards Bedford Street. During this time, for safety reasons, it will be necessary to suspend some of the parking bays along this section of Ormeau Avenue. Two- way traffic will be maintained with one lane remaining open in each direction, a contraflow system will be in operation during these works.

Charlotte Street Car Park – Pipeline installation works are due to commence around Monday 10th September 2018 within the Charlotte Street Car Park and will take 3-4 weeks to complete. During this time for safety reasons, it will be necessary to close an area within the car park reducing the number of available spaces.

Dublin Road – Pipeline installation works are due to commence on Monday 24th September 2018 between Marcus Ward Street and Pakenham Street. The work will be undertaken in short sections with reinstatement completed on each section, as pipelaying is complete. During this time for safety reasons, it will be necessary to suspend some of the parking bays and part of the taxi rank along this section of the street. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on the Dublin Road during these works.

Traffic management signage and diversion routes will be in place as appropriate during these works.

We will continue to endeavour to keep the public updated with timescale for completion of each section of the project. However, as with any large and complex capital project, adjustments to timeframes are to be expected.

When complete, this investment will significantly reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding in this area of Belfast during periods of heavy rainfall. Environmental pollution will also be reduced, and the water quality in the Blackstaff Culvert and River Lagan will be enhanced.

NI Water would like to thank the public for their ongoing patience and cooperation during the completion of this essential improvement work. We assure you that we will do everything that we can to keep all future disruption to a minimum.

ENDS.
