Sewer Rehabilitation Work Gets Underway in Downpatrick
11 August 2017 14:53
NI Water together with its appointed contractor, Quinn Automatic Ltd will commence sewer rehabilitation works in Irish Street, Downpatrick in mid-August 2017. We anticipate that the work will take approximately 5 weeks to complete. This follows previous investigation works carried out to identify any defects within the existing sewerage system.
The majority of these works will be undertaken during normal working hours. However, due to their location, and in order to minimise disruption to businesses, road users and the public, it may be necessary for some work to be undertaken during evening/night time hours. We will do everything within our means to keep noise levels to a minimum during these times.
Where possible the work will be carried out using ‘no-dig’ trenchless techniques to minimise disruption, although at some locations ‘open-dig’ will be necessary due to the condition of the existing sewers.
Detailed traffic management plans have been discussed with the Department for Infrastructure. In order to carry out the works safely it will be necessary to have temporary traffic restrictions in place on Irish Street for the duration of these works. Vehicular access will be maintained for residents/businesses where possible and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
When complete the project will provide the local community with improved sewerage systems that are less prone to failure from blockages and sewer collapses and will also reduce the risks of ‘out of sewer’ flooding and environmental pollution.
NI Water and our contractor Quinn Automatic Ltd. would like to thank the public in advance for their patience while these essential works are completed. Please be assured that we are doing everything we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible. Customer queries should be directed to Waterline on 03457 440088.
