Bangor Sewerage Improvement Scheme Continues – Castle Park

NI Water is currently undertaking a major Capital works programme to improve the sewerage infrastructure and key pumping stations in the Bangor area. The overall project represents an overall investment of approximately £12million in the local infrastructure by NI Water.
 
The current phase of the programme involves replacement of the existing Waste Water pumping station at Castle Park along with the upgrade of sewers in the area. As part of this phase it is necessary to lay a section of new storm sewer across the Belfast Road/Newtownards Road junction. The laying of this new sewer will allow the closure of four combined sewer overflows, which will reduce the risk of out-of-sewer flooding and environmental pollution.
 
This work is programmed to be carried out over three consecutive weekends commencing on Friday 24th February 2017. Work will commence at 7pm on Friday evening and continue until 6am Monday morning. Works of this nature inevitably involve the use of heavy machinery, however we will endeavour to minimise noise as far as possible especially during night-time hours, and undertake the most disruptive elements of work prior to 11pm wherever possible.
 
Traffic management arrangements have been discussed with TransportNI and in order for this work to be carried out safely, it will be necessary to have a lane closure in place on the first two weekends (24th – 27th February & 3rd – 6th March). During this time the Newtownards Road will be closed in the Bangor direction, and on the third weekend (10th – 13th March) the Newtownards Road will be closed in the Newtownards direction. There will also be some restriction to right turning traffic from the Belfast Road / Abbey Street / Brunswick Road at the junction. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted and temporary traffic signals will be in place at the junction.
 
Please be aware that construction sites are dangerous areas for unauthorised persons, especially children, and we would appreciate your co-operation in ensuring that children do not play in or around the site or machinery. Working areas will have warning signs in place to protect the public from any hazards. The public are advised to stay out of these working areas for their own safety.
