NI Water to invest £1.3m to improve local water infrastructure in Belleek

NI Water will shortly begin an extensive programme of work to refurbish and improve the water infrastructure serving the Belleek area.

The work, which will be undertaken on behalf of NI Water by BSG Civil Engineering, will involve laying approximately 5km of new water mains along part of the Lough Shore Road, Brollagh Road and Cornahaltie Road, up to Gortnalee Service Reservoir, as well as carrying out refurbishments at Drumlisaleen Water Pumping Station (off Brollagh Road). This investment will reinforce the existing network, improve the security of supply for local customers and help to safeguard against freeze/ thaw events in winter.

The first phase of pipelaying will get underway on the Cornahaltie Road on Monday 12th December. Due to the narrowness of the road and to facilitate the pipelaying in the safest possible manner, the Cornahaltie Road will be closed to through traffic from Gortnalee Service Reservoir (approx. 6km from the junction with Glennasheevar Road) to Farrancassidy Crossroads for a period of 4-6 weeks.

During this time the approved diversion route will be signposted and access will be maintained by the contractor for residents who live within the road closure area. The road will be reopened to accommodate through traffic over the Christmas construction holiday period (23rd December 2016 – 8th January 2017).

Pipelaying on the Brollagh Road and Lough Shore Road will commence respectively following completion of the work on the Cornahaltie Road. At this stage it is expected that work on Brollagh Road will get underway around the middle of February 2017 with the Lough Shore Road section being undertaken in early April 2017. Both of these sections of pipelaying will be carried out under a lane closure with temporary lights to manage traffic flow.

The new pipeline and pumping station upgrade will boost the integrity of the local water supply infrastructure and importantly will protect against bursts which have been a problem in the Belleek area in the past.

“NI Water, BSG and our technical consultants, McAdam Design, are aware that pipelaying work on roads can cause inconvenience for members of the local community and we will work to ensure that this contract is carried out with minimal disruption. In addition to maintaining access for local residents, letter drops will be carried out and signage will be erected in advance of any pipelaying works getting underway.
