Newtownards Sewer Rehabilitation Project Continues

14 November 2016 11:19

NI Water would like to update the public on progress on the Sewer Rehabilitation Programme in Newtownards.  This work is part of an overall £18 million investment programme which will take place across Northern Ireland over the next 5 years to improve the existing sewerage network and reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding.

This project is being carried out in two stages. Stage one involved the investigative and design work, which included pipeline / manhole cleaning and CCTV surveys. This work was completed in these areas in late 2015 and 2016. This identified a number of sections of the existing sewers which are in very poor condition.

To rectify these sections of sewer and avoid potential future collapse or flooding issues, the stage two improvement works are now underway. Stage two involves the installation of “liners” in existing pipelines, the open-dig repair of short sections of sewer at isolated locations, as well as the laying of some sections of new replacement pipelines and associated works.
The first phase of this work will get underway in mid-November and will take approximately 6 weeks to complete. The work will take place in the outskirts of Newtownards and signage will be in place as work progresses. The majority of work in this phase will be completed utilising trenchless ‘no-dig’ techniques. The trenchless techniques significantly reduce the amount of digging and ensure that repairs are completed as quickly as possible.

It will be necessary at some locations to have short duration lane/road closures in place in order for the works to be carried out safely. This is to protect the safety of road users, the public and construction workers. It may also be necessary at some locations for work to be undertaken outside of normal working hours, and in some cases during the night to reduce disruption.
Traffic management and signage will be in place in all areas as necessary to inform the public in advance of the work. Vehicular access will be maintained for residents/businesses as far as possible, and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

NI Water and our contractor Dawson WAM Ltd. would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation while we complete this essential work and will do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum, ensuring that the work is completed as soon as practicably possible.
