Sewer Rehabilitation Project Continues- Portadown / Lurgan / Magheralin Area
25 October 2016 12:29
NI Water’s Sewer Rehabilitation Programme is currently underway in the Portadown, Lurgan and Magheralin area. This work is part of an overall £18 million investment programme which will take place across Northern Ireland over the next 5 years to improve the existing sewerage network and reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding. This project is being carried out in two stages. Stage one involved the investigative and design work, which included pipeline / manhole cleaning and CCTV surveys. This work was completed in these areas in late 2015 and 2016. This identified a number of sections of the existing sewers which are in very poor condition.
To rectify these sections of sewer and avoid potential future collapse or flooding issues, the stage two improvement works are now underway. Stage two involves the installation of “liners” in existing pipelines, the open-cut repair of short sections of sewer at isolated locations, as well as the laying of some sections of new replacement pipelines and associated works.
The first phase of work in these areas commenced in September 2016 and we anticipate that work will be complete by Spring 2017. This phase of work will involve a combination of trenchless ‘no-dig’ techniques and ‘open-dig’ works. The trenchless techniques significantly reduce the amount of digging and ensure that repairs are completed as quickly as possible and will be utilised wherever possible.
The works will be carried out at various locations throughout Portadown, Lurgan and Magheralin during this time, and notifications will be issued to residents and businesses in the affected areas as the work progresses. It will be necessary at some locations to have lane/road closures in place in order for the works to be carried out safely. This is to protect the safety of road users, the public and construction workers. It may also be necessary at some locations for work to be undertaken outside of normal working hours to reduce disruption.
Traffic management and signage will be in place in all areas as necessary to inform the public in advance of the work. Vehicular access will be maintained for residents/businesses as far as possible, and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
NI Water and our contractor Geda Ovivo Ltd. would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation while we complete this essential work and will do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum, ensuring that the work is completed as soon as practicably possible.
