Watermains Improvement Programme Gets Underway In East Belfast
25 June 2012 15:34
As part of its Province wide Watermains Rehabilitation Programme, NI Water, together with its contractors, Farrans Construction will shortly commence work on the final stage of a £4 Million investment to improve and upgrade the watermains network in East Belfast. The two remaining elements of the work package which will take place on the Upper Newtownards Road area will commence on the 2nd July 2012 and will continue until the end of August 2012 This work has been planned in close consultation with DRD Roads Service to take place over the summer months to reduce disruption to the travelling public.
The main element of the works will take place on the citybound carriageway between Knockdene Park and the Knock dual carriageway junction and also in the vicinity of Stoney Road. A number of road crossings at various locations will also be completed along the Upper Newtownards Road. Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times, however there will be lane restrictions and therefore delays should be expected.
A second element of the work to install a new water main on North Road will commence on Monday 16th July 2012. The new main will be laid between the junction with the Upper Newtownards Road and the Bloomfield Road roundabout. In order to ensure the safety of the travelling public and our contractors, it will be necessary to put in place a one-way traffic system for the duration of the works as agreed with DRD Roads Service.
Traffic wishing to travel towards the Upper Newtownards Road will continue as normal. However traffic wishing to travel towards Bloomfield Road will be diverted via Beersbridge Road.
Please be aware that vehicles exiting side streets onto the city-bound carriageway of North Road will be restricted to right turn only. There will also be limited or restricted access for vehicles entering or exiting side streets on the country-bound carriageway. Signage will be in place to advise drivers of any diversions or restrictions.
During the works period, inbound Translink services will be suspended along the North Road. Temporary bus stops will be located on the Upper Newtownards Road and the Beersbridge Road. Outbound services will continue as normal. For more information please contact the Translink Call Centre: 02890 666630.
NI Water and its contractor Farrans Construction would like to thank the residents and the traveling public in advance for their co-operation and patience during this essential improvement work. There may be some disruption and delays at peak times while this work takes place, but we would like to assure customers that every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.
The project is part of NI Water’s ongoing £100 million Watermains Rehabilitation Programme throughout Northern Ireland which involves upgrading and improving in excess of 1000 kilometres of watermain infrastructure throughout Northern Ireland over the next five years. Once complete, this project will be good news for the local area as the upgraded watermains will improve the reliability and flexibility of water supply, drinking water quality and will also help reduce leakage.
