Play Safe, Stay Safe

Now that the Easter break has arrived, NI Water is sending a ‘play safe’ message to young people in the North Belfast and Newtownabbey area.

In light of the company’s Water Mains Improvement Programme, currently underway in the area, NI Water is urging parents to ensure children are aware of the dangers of playing near construction sites.

Gary Curran, Head of the Water Mains Improvement Programme at NI Water explained:

“Understandably some children are drawn to construction sites as exciting places to explore, but they are not playgrounds and playing on them can have dangerous consequences.”

“We want to spread this warning throughout the area and I would urge all parents to keep their children safe by explaining to them the dangers of playing in or around construction sites.”

Gary continued: “NI Water is committed to providing a modern and effective water mains infrastructure across Northern Ireland. We are currently investing approximately £12 million upgrading the water mains in the North Belfast area which results in necessary construction sites. Hopefully our safety message will help to prevent any accidents at our works areas.”

This programme of work is good news for the local area as the upgraded water mains will dramatically improve the quality, reliability and flexibility of water supply, while also reducing leakage. NI Water’s existing infrastructure is aging and in certain areas, the system does not have the capacity to accommodate an increase in housing or development.
