£4m watermain from Newry to Scarva

Work on a £4.4 million water improvement programme will get underway in January 2012 in the Newry and Lough Ross area in Co Armagh, announced NI Water today.

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy welcomed the announcement:

“This investment by Northern Ireland Water is good news for the local area as the project will improve the local infrastructure and security of the water supply, meeting current and future demands on the system. The project involves the construction of a large Watermain stretching 17km from Newry to Scarva. The majority of the pipe will be laid along the A27 Newry to Tandragee Road from Newry to Scarva,” said Danny Kennedy.

Unfortunately, as with all work of this nature, there will be some disruption to through traffic as a one way traffic light system will be in operation in short sections of the road to facilitate laying these mains.

Bill Gowdy, Acting Director of Engineering Procurement NI Water added:

“NI Water would like to thank the public in advance for their co-operation during this vital improvement work and assure them that every effort will be made to keep any disruption to a minimum on the road. The entire programme of work is scheduled to get underway in January 2012 and will be completed by February 2013.”

Lagan Construction is the main contractor for this project working alongside Capita Symonds and WD & RT Taggart.

Last week NI Water announced a £12 million investment on an ongoing water mains improvement programme in Bessbrook, Meigh and the wider Newry area. When complete, this work will improve and upgrade the water supply infrastructure in the area. Work began earlier this month and will continue until Spring 2013.
