Change of Water Supply for Dungannon Customers

NI Water is pleased to announce that customers living in the North and West areas of Dungannon will soon be benefiting from a new water supply, following the completion of the £17 million Castor Bay to Dungannon water trunk main.

Over the coming weeks, customers will receive water from the new trunk main and associated Water Treatment Works (WTW) as Altmore WTW is taken out of service. This switch will ensure that customers in the area will receive a better and more secure water supply.

NI Water’s Environmental Regulation Drinking Water Quality Manager, Alison McMullan, explains:

“The Altmore Water Treatment Works is coming out of operation and our customers in the North and West of Dungannon will be supplied from the Castor Bay Water Treatment Works via the new £17 million Castor Bay to Dungannon water trunk main.

“It is possible that once supply has been switched over, some customers may notice a change in their water supply. Initially, some customers may notice a change in chlorine levels which may rise in some areas and drop in others. Throughout this change over period, NI Water will be monitoring these levels to establish appropriate chlorine levels in the new system.

“Changes in flows may also cause some discolouration and/or air in the system, however, this will be short lived and customers are advised to run the tap for a while until the water runs clear.

“Finally, some customers may notice a change in hardness levels in the water as this will rise in some areas and drop in others.

“The switch is expected to take place over a phased period of time, so it may be some weeks before customers notice a difference, while some will not experience any difference at all.

“This is good news for the community and will ensure that customers will benefit from increased security of supply and drinking water quality. This is a clear indication that our customers are benefiting from the substantial investment made by NI Water in our water supply services.”

Work on the trunk main commenced in November 2009 and involved not only the construction of the main, but also the construction of new pumping stations and a service reservoir.

ӢThe Castor Bay to Dungannon Trunk main was completed to expand the existing water network infrastructure in the Craigavon, Armagh and Dungannon areas.

ӢIt included the provision of around 51km of new trunk main to supply the daily demand for the Dungannon Resource Zone from the Castor Bay Water Treatment Works.
