Vandalism poses serious risk to the community

NI Water is appealing to the public to help prevent further vandalism at Dunmurry Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW).

Incidents of vandalism have been increasing in recent months at the Dunmurry Works while NI Water is working to upgrade it. The work, which represents an investment of £5 million, will enhance the service provided to the area by reducing the environmental impact of the Works while allowing for further development in the area.

The upgrade, which is scheduled for completion in early 2012, is primarily taking place within the existing site at Dunmurry WwTW.

Project Manager, Derek Crabbe said:

“Unfortunately, there has been a number of break ins at the site over the last couple of months, and we would appeal for the support of the whole community to be aware of the dangers at our construction sites. We are concerned that these activities will result in a serious accident.”

“The cost of repairing the damage is also a factor. This vandalism creates a needless drain on extremely limited resources that could be better used to improve services to the local community.”

If any member of the public witnesses any suspicious activities around the site, particularly out of working hours, they are encouraged to report this to the PSNI. Any other information can be sought or reported to NI Water’s customer relations team via Waterline on 08457 440088.
