Annaclone to Benefit From £600,000 Investment

Northern Ireland Water will this week commence an extensive programme of upgrades at Monteith Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) at Annaclone outside Katesbridge.

The massive overhaul is being undertaken as part of NI Water’s Rural Wastewater Investment Programme, which has already seen the upgrade of 14 wastewater treatment systems throughout rural parts of Co. Down.

Speaking about the refurbishments planned for Monteith, Martin Gillen, senior project manager for NI Water said:

“This essential upgrade work, which will last for approximately 10-12 weeks, will involve the installation of modern new infrastructure at the Monteith Road site to provide higher quality treatment solutions and allow for development in the area to the year 2018. The sophisticated processes due to be installed will increase the capabilities of the sewage works and ensure stringent EU discharge standards are met for many years to come.

“The improvements on site will initially involve some piling followed by excavation work to make way for the new fully-covered hi-tech tanks. For the first 2-3 weeks of the contract, lorries will be entering and exiting the site to remove excavated spoil and make deliveries of materials such as concrete, stone etc. In this respect we would ask all parents to be aware that construction vehicle movements along part of the Monteith Road will be increased on occasions during the contract.

“NI Water and its contractors, BSG Civil Engineering, have been liaising with the local primary school and will ensure that, as far as possible, all site deliveries take place outside the main school drop off and pick up times, when the Monteith Road is busiest.

“The project team will do everything possible to ensure any disruption to traffic and the local community is kept to an absolute minimum, and would stress that water and wastewater services in the area will not be affected as a result of this essential upgrade work.”
