Sewer Laying To Commence in Derry City

Northern Ireland Water (NI Water) wishes to announce that it will be carrying out essential work in and around the City over the coming months.The main aim of this work is to improve the sewerage infrastructure in the City and increase capacity in the Quay Route Trunk Sewer, the main sewer serving the Cityside area. It will facilitate planned and future development within the City as well as reducing localised ‘out of sewer’ flooding in the sewerage network.
NI Water have agreed the programming of this work in close liaison with DRD Roads Service and PSNI. Derry City Council have also received a presentation on this scheme and the benefits it will bring to the City.
Phase 1 of the work involves pipe laying from Craigavon Bridge along the Expressway to Queen’s Quay Pumping Station.
The work along the Expressway is scheduled to be completed in June. Night work will then commence to lay pipeline from the City Hotel to Queen’s Quay Pumping Station.
The scheme also involves refurbishment of the Queen’s Quay existing pumping station and upgrading works on the existing station in the grounds of Waterside House on Duke Street. This work will ensure the stations meet NIEA (Northern Ireland Environment Agency) requirements.
Further work will also commence on 10 May 2010 to replace both the watermain and sewer running along the bottom deck of Craigavon Bridge, this will require a full night time closure of the bottom deck, lasting approximately four weeks. In order to minimise the disruption to traffic flows to and from the city centre, the work will be carried out at night.
All efforts will be made by NI Water and their contractors to carry out this essential upgrade work as quickly as possible and the team will strive to ensure minimum possible disruption to the local community and road users.
