Statement on Flooding
01 September 2009 15:13
Following heavy rain in Co Antrim and Co Down on Monday 31st August, NI Water worked in close liaison with colleagues from Rivers Agency, Roads Service and Fire and Rescue to identify and deal with a series of flooding incidents.NI Water staff and contractors were mobilised to deal with blocked sewers and carry out clean-up and disinfectant operations where out of sewer flooding occurred.
Improving the experience of those who live and work in areas vulnerable to out-of-sewer flooding is an investment priority for NI Water and features strongly in the company’s current and future spending plans.
For example, the Belfast Sewer Project, which will improve the situation in the greater city centre area, is due for completion in 2010 and represents an investment of c. £160M.
In East Belfast, a Drainage Area Plan is being progressed. This will most likely lead to proposals for further investment in East Belfast. This further investment has been included in investment plans which have been submitted to the Utility Regulator. We look forward to engaging with local stakeholders on these plans over the coming months.
