Customer Requested Disconnection

There are two types of customer-requested disconnection of metered water supplies:

  • Permanent disconnection
  • Temporary disconnection

Permanent Disconnection

Customers no longer requiring a water & sewerage connection on a permanent basis can request such a disconnection by fully completing and returning a “Request to Disconnect a Metered Water Supply” form. An individual form should be completed for each metered supply. Please note that incomplete request forms will be returned.

The permanent disconnection process will disable the supply to the extent that it will not be possible to restore service through the pipe at any time in the future. In some cases this may extend to complete removal of the pipework between the water main and the NI Water stop tap, as well as the stop tap and meter assembly itself, being removed. This may involve excavation work in the vicinity of the supply.

Following permanent disconnection, full new connection charges are applicable if the connection is once more required.  See the Scheme of Charges for more details.

Temporary Disconnection

Water & sewerage standing charges continue to apply when a metered property is unoccupied & unfurnished or; furnished & no water consumption is being recorded by the meter. Customers can request to have the supply temporarily disconnected to reduce the charges for which they will be liable.

Customers no longer requiring a water & sewerage connection on a temporary basis can request such a disconnection by fully completing and returning a “Request to Disconnect a Metered Water Supply” form. An individual form should be completed for each metered supply. Please note that incomplete request forms will be returned.

The temporary disconnection process will involve isolating the supply at the NI Water stop tap.  The pipework between the water main and the NI Water stop tap will be left intact.

A reconnection charge must be paid before the supply can be restored following temporary disconnection. See the Scheme of Charges for more details.

It is a criminal offence to operate the NI Water stop tap without authorisation.
